The fully equipped Wärtsilä fitting shop services include a newly designed and installed hydraulic Spin Testing Rig. This is primarily designed to test the operation of right-angled gearboxes and ship’s thrusters which contain crownwheel and pinion gearsets. However, the unit can also ‘spin’ a wide variety of mechanical components and assemblies that are shaft-driven and contain gears and roller bearings.
The Rig has an array of sensors to monitor input revolutions per minute (RPM), temperatures, hydraulic pressures and vibration at up to six locations if required. During the test, readings from all the sensors are collated and downloaded to provide a performance graph for the unit under test.
