The G.O. Sars, launched in 2003, is fitted with a propulsion system designed to eliminate underwater noise whilst operating at 11 knots.
The G.O. Sars is one of the most advanced research vessels in the world, and is operated by the Institute of Marine Research (IMR) of Norway. With its vibration- and noise-damped diesel generators, and its propellers driven by direct current motors, the G.O. Sars is an extremely quiet vessel. It emits 99 % less underwater noise than conventional research vessels.
A single Fixed Pitch Propeller is driven by three Wärtsilä 6L32 double elastically mounted generating sets producing 8,1 MW.
