Wärtsilä delivers its first engine plus storage hybrid installation enabling Hungary’s ALTEO Group to optimize their generation portfolio

Wärtsilä Corporation, Press release 23 August 2018 at 16:30 UTC+2
  • Wärtsilä s first EPC energy storage project in Europe in Budapest Hungary

The technology group Wärtsilä has delivered its first engine plus storage hybrid installation worldwide and its first Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) energy storage project in Europe, to Sinergy Kft, subsidiary of ALTEO Group, in Budapest, Hungary. Wärtsilä energy storage solutions enable power companies and developers to integrate and optimise a diverse mix of grid resources and deliver flexibility, reliability and resilience for customers seeking best-in-class system performance. The order was booked in Q1 2018 and the project was successfully commissioned on the 22nd of August 2018.

The existing power plant, running on 3 Wärtsilä W34SG engines, is now optimised with an energy storage solution that also incorporates GEMS, an industry-leading energy management system from Greensmith Energy, a Wärtsilä company. The installation will enable ALTEO to participate in the electricity market by providing frequency and secondary regulation to the national grid operating in virtual power plant mode.

“The project was accomplished smoothly, owing to the great engineering work of Greensmith. The integration of the energy storage system is a huge step in ALTEO’s Virtual Power Plant development and we strongly believe that this technology has opened us new opportunities to successfully respond to upcoming challenges” says Peter Luczay, Director of wholesale energy trading and virtual power plant management at ALTEO.

GEMS, a critical component of Wärtsilä’s engine plus storage hybrid installation, analyses changes in market conditions and rate structures, effectively "future-proofing" energy storage investments for both power developers and regulated utilities. Ancillary services are a proven application provided by GEMS, generating revenue for ALTEO.

“The ALTEO project is a great demonstration of Wärtsilä’s EPC expertise and Greensmith’s unparalleled software and energy storage knowledge benefitting the customer and providing new opportunities in the market, says Markus Ehrström, Business Development Manager, Wärtsilä Energy Solutions. Wärtsilä is a global energy systems integrator and in the future we will continue to see more examples of energy storage and sophisticated software controls being paired with power plants, wind, buildings and hydro to create hybrid solutions that cut carbon, lower costs and optimise generation.”

Wärtsilä’s fast delivery of this energy storage solution to ALTEO includes batteries, inverters and power electronics. This energy storage system is fully integrated with the existing power plant using GEMS. The total output of the battery storage plant is 6 MW / 4 MWh.

ALTEO Group is a Hungary based energy service provider and trading company listed on the Hungarian Budapest Stock Exchange (BUX) since 2010. Its business scope includes renewable and natural gas-based energy generation, energy trading, and tailor-made energy services for companies. ALTEO provides its customers reliable and environmentally conscious solutions for their energy needs while it also put focus on the sustainability of its services. As an energy retailer, its partners include Hungarian small and medium-sized enterprises and large companies alike. ALTEO is a dynamically developing company that is constantly looking for investment and expansion opportunities thereby permanently increase shareholder value.
