Wärtsilä Corporation, Trade and Technical Press release, 15 April 2008

Wärtsilä has been awarded a Certificate of Recognition for its performance as a contractor in safety, health and environmental management for the year 2007 by OCP, Oleoducto de Crudos Pesados Ecuador S.A.

OCP is one of Wärtsilä’s most important customers in Ecuador. For four years, Wärtsilä has been working with OCP under a maintenance contract with 28 engines. The engines are installed in four pumping stations on a 503 km pipeline transporting crude oil from Nueva Loja province of Sucumbíos in the rain forest to the harbour of Esmeraldas on the Pacific coast. The pipeline crosses the Andes mountains at 4200 m altitude above sea level.

“Wärtsilä sets out to be the most valued business partner of its customers, and Wärtsilä in Ecuador feels honoured to have accomplished this corporate mission and vision by receiving OCP’s Certificate of Recognition. We are committed to continue being OCP’s most trusted partner,” said Gustavo Fierro, President of Wärtsilä in Ecuador.

Wärtsilä responsible for maintenance

Under the maintenance contract, Wärtsilä is responsible for the implementation of routine maintenance, spare parts and major overhauls as well as the manpower for the same and also to maintain a safety stock to ensure maximum availability of the pipeline at the OCP pumping stations.

The pumping sets comprise 22 Wärtsilä 12V32 engines driving centrifugal crude-oil pumps. In addition, there are four generating sets powered by Wärtsilä 6V32 engines generating power for the Amazonas and Sardines pumping stations. All the engines run on crude oil from the pipeline. Additionally there are two Wärtsilä 12V200 engines in standby generating sets running on light fuel oil (LFO).

Wärtsilä had the lowest accident rate

Certificates of Recognition were established by OCP as an incentive to the contracting companies, which provide services to OCP. The pipeline company decided to create an award for the best contractor that completes defined standards in the areas of safety, health and environment. Of 14 contractors, Wärtsilä was granted this award as the best contractor for having the lowest accident rate, for fulfilling the standards for the use of safety equipment, having effective emergency plans, and for its properly trained personnel.
