The technology group Wärtsilä has made a donation of USD 50,000 to aid in the restoration of power to Caribbean communities hit by the recent hurricanes. The cheque was handed over to the Chairman of CARILEC, the association of Caribbean electric utilities, at a ceremony held on the island of Grenada on October 4.
Wärtsilä has a significant presence in the Caribbean energy market with a current total of more than 3000 MW of generating capacity. The company has been an associate member of CARILEC since 1996 and during this time has been an avid supporter and a regular sponsor of CARILEC conferences.
“The recent catastrophic storms have caused major damage to the region’s power infrastructure and tremendous hardship to millions of people. Wärtsilä has installations on almost all the Caribbean islands and we feel very much a part of the region’s busines community. This donation is, therefore, something that we feel is part of our responsibility, and is something that we are pleased to do,” commented, Rodney George, Vice President, Caribbean, Wärtsilä Energy Solutions.
“On behalf of all CARILEC members, I want to thank Wärtsilä for this generous contribution to our efforts to restore power lost in the hurricanes. We have crews working hard to overcome this challenge and our resources are stretched, so this donation is both needed and much appreciated,” responded Mr. Collin Cover, Chairman of CARILEC.
In 1998, Wärtsilä made a donation of USD 50,000 to CARILEC for similar restoration work following the devastating hurricane Georges.
