The HMS Daring, commissioned in 2009, is the first of six vessels of the new Type 45 class. Each Type 45 Destroyer has an IEP (Integrated Electric Propulsion) system consisting of two gas turbine alternators and two Wärtsilä 12V200 diesel alternators. (photo courtesy of BVT). The primary role of the Type 45 Anti Air Warfare destroyers is the protection of ships, carriers, auxiliaries and merchant vessels from air, surface and subsurface threats. Specific Ministry of Defense (MoD) requirements for the work cover shock resistance, special safety obligations, reduced noise levels and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) testing for electronics.
The Type 45 destroyers are fitted with Wärtsilä Water & Waste advanced waste water processing Membrane Bioreactor MBR50N. This MBR is based on biological degradation and membrane separation. The system allows for the treatment of grey and black water to satisfy the most stringent standards. The process produces the highest quality discharge without requiring any addition or generation of chemicals that are hazardous to the environment or ship operation.
The Type 45 destroyers are also equipped with M series stern shaft seals. An innovative wrapped bellows design, incorporating fully or partially split assemblies, enables installation and service of the equipment without the need to remove the propeller or tail-shaft.
