Depending on their mission, ships can be divided into different categories: naval vessels, commercial (merchant) vessels transporting cargo or/and passengers, industrial vessels performing specialized marine functions such as fishing, drilling, cable or pipe laying, service vessels providing support to commercial ships and/or industrial vessels. An increasing occurrence of multi-purpose ships and development of novel types of ships makes them difficult to categorize.
