The Saimaa Canal runs through Russian as well as Finnish territory, and provides a direct route to and from ports located in the Saimaa Lake District. Key cargoes on the Saimaa system include timber, paper products, coal, raw minerals and mineral products. The 82.5m length overall is the maximum for the Saimaa, as is the 12.50m moulded breadth for various locks on the system. Draught 4.35m permits access to ports on the Finnish lakes.
