Passenger vessels over 500GT and cargo ships over 2000GT with the keel laid after July 2002 will have to be fitted with local fire protection in machinery spaces in addition to the CO2 system. Local fire protection requires a water-based extinguishing system as it can be activated quickly without the need to ensure all the crew is out of the engine room.
