Estimation of lightship mass is one of the most important tasks when a new ship is designed. In the preliminary design stage, the lightweight can be derived from the masses of a parent ship. For vessels having similar arrangements the coefficient P/LBD can be used.
P = lightship mass, L = Length between perpendiculars, B = Breadth, D = Depth
HTS = percentage of high-tensile steel used in construction.
