Sustainable Technology Hub

Since its opening in 2022, Wärtsilä's Sustainable Technology Hub in Vaasa, Finland, plays a pivotal role in propelling the marine and energy industries towards decarbonisation and the energy transition.

This globally unparalleled technology centre is at the forefront of driving Wärtsilä's commitment to sustainability and innovation.

The Sustainable Technology Hub operates with a dedicated and skilled team, utilising state-of-the-art testing and production technology. This is combined with a unique approach to collaboration and innovation, involving Wärtsilä experts, as well as customers, technology partners, academia, and the surrounding ecosystem. The research is focused on the suitability of sustainable fuels for the ever-evolving needs of the marine and energy industries.

All Wärtsilä portfolio engines are manufactured in the technology centre. The production process incorporates robotics, automation, and intelligent production control systems, resulting in improved efficiency and operational safety. In addition to its advanced manufacturing capabilities, the technology centre also houses a training centre and one of Wärtsilä's globally serving remote monitoring centres.

Ecosystem of collaboration

Wärtsilä’s purpose is to enable sustainable societies through innovation in technology and services. The Sustainable Technology Hub is the place where we turn our visions into reality. The ecosystem around STH is built on Wärtsilä’s technologies and partner’s capabilities.

In STH we are able to do research, develop, innovate and pilot products and solutions that will support our journey towards a sustainable society. This is done together with ecosystems of players, such as companies, start-ups, organisations and academia. Together we are on a journey towards decarbonisation.

STH acts as a natural platform for mutual innovation and co-creation, deepening the collaboration with both local and global partners through the Partner Campus and Wärtsilä’s other globally located Centres of Excellence. STH’s location close to the harbour also offers great possibilities in terms of green shipping, smart port development and collaboration. Furthermore, STH is located in the energy cluster of the Vaasa region, which is the leading energy region in the Nordics. With other key-players, we will position ourselves as a leading ecosystem of collaboration.

Technology Partners

As a part of building an ecosystem way of working, we collaborate with external partners in STH. The STH Technology Partner concept deepens the collaboration between Wärtsilä and its partners and brings with it multiple synergies. With the help of our partners, we make sure that the technology centre will be equipped with modern products and solutions, making it a benchmark to the world. Our partners include ABB, Cyient, Danfoss, Fastems, Hydroniq Coolers, Konecranes, Schneider Electric and Solving.
