Alternative Maritime Power (AMP) – easiest cold ironing

Take electricity from shore to ship when in port instead of using on-board engines for power generation.

Ship-to-shore power systems - Alternative Maritime Power

Use alternative maritime power (AMP) for your ship: take power from the shore grid instead of running the ship’s onboard engines.

When the onshore grid gets its power from renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, or water, the ship generates no emissions while in port. Because onboard engines can be shut off during the port stay, noise is also eliminated.

AMP is also called cold ironing, Onshore Power Supply OPS, Shore Connection SC, or High Voltage Shore Connection HVSC.

Wärtsilä’s alternative maritime power solutions are available as built-in shore-side systems or deck-mounted containerised systems. They have been designed according to the IEC 80005 standard for high-voltage shore connection systems. The standard applies to container ships, cruise ships, RoRo cargo ships, LNG carriers and tankers. It can easily be applied also to other vessel types, including those that require a low-voltage system such as bulkers or offshore vessels.

The Wärtsilä Shore Power Container (SPC) system is a complete alternative marine power solution for container vessels.

Alternative marine power solutions for newbuilds and retrofits

The Wärtsilä SPC system sits inside a standard 40-foot-high container that can be installed in any suitable location on the vessel’s deck. A 20-foot single-component version is also available on request. For low-voltage applications, the SPC system can include a step-down transformer. For retrofits Wärtsilä offers complete onboard installation including connection to the vessel’s main switchboards.
