The drilling rig Transocean Barents is designed to operate in tough environments and at water depths of 3000 metres.
The type ‘H6e’ drilling rig is a sixth-generation, semi-submersible, DP3 rig designed for global operation in ultra-deep waters. The hull section of the rig was built at the Dubai Drydocks in Dubai. The top side and complete rig was built by Stord shipyard in Norway. The Transocean Barents started drilling in 2009 for oil and gas on the Norwegian continental shelf. During its operating history, it has also been called the Aker Barents.
Wärtsilä supplied to the drilling rig thrusters motors, transformers, VSDs and switchboards. In addition to the delivery of equipment, Wärtsilä was responsible for all system engineering and the electrical system.
The rig market represents a watershed between the traditional shipbuilding industry, and the oil and gas industry. Versatility was the key asset when forming the project teams.
