How to meet the key challenges facing fishing vessels

The operational profile of fishing vessels varies significantly depending on factors such as geographical location, fishing method, environmental conditions and whether they operate in coastal or deep-sea waters. Developing the optimal solution for a fishing vessel requires a deep understanding of its various operational modes – and Wärtsilä has that.

Wärtsilä hybrid propulsion system

Because the power requirements depend on the operational mode, a flexible hybrid system offers many advantages. One example is the Wärtsilä hybrid propulsion system, which includes:

  • a fuel-flexible medium-speed main engine
  • geared propeller systems
  • power take-off/power take-in (PTO/PTI)
  • one or two auxiliary gensets
  • a battery-based energy storage system (ESS).

An integrated energy management system (EMS) will ensure optimal operation under all conditions for maximum efficiency.

The battery-based ESS performs several key functions:

  1. Peak shaving: The ESS smooths out the power demand, avoiding drastic load variations. This allows the engine to operate more efficiently.
  2. Boost: The ESS can provide extra propulsion power when required.
  3. Reliability: The battery acts as spinning reserve, enhancing redundancy in case of system faults.
  4. Power storage: If the vessel has lifting equipment like electric winches, the ESS can store surplus power from lifting operations for later use.
  5. Lower emissions in port: Batteries minimise the need to use auxiliary gensets to generate power for cargo operations and to cover the hotel load, lowering emissions and reducing engine running hours.

Header Paragraph

Alternative fuels

For fishing vessels, future fuels – also known as alternative fuels – must be part of the decarbonisation strategy alongside optimised engines and propulsion solutions. Ultimately, the goal is to conduct fishing operations economically while minimising environmental emissions throughout the vessel’s operational lifecycle.

Shore power

Shore power solutions allow you to plug your fishing vessel into the onshore electricity grid when in port. The FuelEU Maritime regulation requires all EU ports to have a shore power connection from 2030. Plugging into shore power gives fishing vessels the option to reduce the number and size of installed auxiliary gensets.

System operational modes

Mechanical mode

The vessel sails as a conventional vessel, with the main engine driving the propeller and a single auxiliary genset running to meet the onboard electrical power demand. This is the system fallback mode for any vessel operation.

Hybrid mode

The main engine runs at optimal load, driving the propeller to ensure an economic sailing speed. It also drives the PTO to meet the onboard electrical power demand. The ESS provides peak shaving as well as backup and immediate power.

This mode is typically used when sailing and for fishing operations where there is limted need for propulsion power and electrical load. It can also be used when manoeuvring.

Electric mode

The auxiliary genset provides electrical power for the PTI, which works as an electric engine to supply propulsion power. The ESS operates in peak shaving mode. This mode is ideal for navigation at slow speed and as a redundant ‘take-me-home’ mode.

Boost mode

The main engine and PTI drive the propeller, while the auxiliary genset and ESS cover the onboard electrical power and PTI demand. This mode is ideal for fishing operations where there is significant need for propulsion power and electrical load. It can also be used to help the vessel achieve maximum speed under harsh weather conditions.

Manoeuvring mode

The main engine drives the propeller and the PTO, which covers the onboard electrical power demand and provides power for the thrusters together with the ESS. The ESS also provides peak shaving as well as backup and immediate power.

Hotel mode

Where available, shoreside power can be used to meet the onboard electrical power demand and charge the battery-based ESS. Where shoreside power is not available the hotel load is covered by the auxiliary genset. The ESS can provide peak shaving when required.

Main engine genset mode

In this back-up mode, the engine can be decoupled from the propeller and used in combination with the PTO to cover the hotel load and to charge the battery-based ESS if needed.

This mode provides additional redundancy for situations where neither shoreside power nor the auxiliary genset are available.

Why Wärtsilä?

Wärtsilä’s solutions for fishing vessels are based on a deep understanding of your vessel’s operational modes. This includes analysing how time will be allocated to different activities such as fishing, transit and port operations as well as to specific tasks like searching, catching, hauling and pumping. Working closely with you, we also analyse how the vessel power requirements – including propulsive power and power for auxiliary systems like pumps, winches, fishing gear and onboard factories – will differ across these modes. The end result is a solution design that will maximise the efficiency and reliability of your vessel.
