Fast, cost-efficient plant construction

Prefabricated power plant modules with streamlined, simplified interfaces mean your Wärtsilä 46TS engine power plant can be up and running quickly for a faster return on your investment. The modular setup also means your plant can be scaled up as needed, allowing you to integrate more renewables in the future.

The heart of your plant is the power unit, comprising the engine and associated essential equipment. The unit can be installed and ready to start generating power in a matter of days. The power unit can be complemented with process modules that enable easy integration of auxiliary equipment, process media and filtration. You can also add electrical modules to enable easy integration of low and medium-voltage systems.

Future-proof technology for long-term peace of mind

With fuel-flexible engines, you can minimise the risk of investing in assets that may become unprofitable or even obsolete. The Wärtsilä 46TS has been designed to operate on various gaseous and liquid fuels, including natural gas, biogas and hydrogen blends up to 25%.

Whatever fuels become dominant in the future, the Wärtsilä 46TS will be able to run on them thanks to its groundbreaking modular design, which makes it easier than ever before to convert to sustainable fuels as they become available.

Wärtsilä engines to power 120 MW plant in Kazakhstan

Jan 8, 2025, 09:00 by Wärtsilä Corporation

Technology group Wärtsilä will supply the engineered equipment for a new 120 MW power plant under construction in Kazakhstan. The order was placed by Kazakhstan Caspian Offshore Industries (KCOI) and booked by Wärtsilä in Q4 2024. The order scope includes six Wärtsilä 46TS-SG gas-fuelled large bore engines, as well as mechanical and electrical auxiliary equipment.

KCOI is the main contractor for the development of a major hybrid power project in the Mangystau region, which in addition to the engine power plant, will comprise a 77 MW wind power plant and a 50 MW solar power plant. When completed, the project will supply electrical power to oil and gas facilities in the region. The fast-starting Wärtsilä engines will provide the necessary secure and stable supply needed to compensate for the intrinsic fluctuation of electricity generation from the renewable sources.

“This will be the first hybrid project of its type to be implemented in Kazakhstan. The engine power plant is essential to enable a stable and reliable supply of electricity, and the Wärtsilä engines will efficiently regulate the frequency and voltage to ensure this reliability is achieved,” says Mirko Borghesi, CEO of KCOI.

Delivery of the Wärtsilä equipment is scheduled for the end of 2025, and the project is expected to be fully operational by mid-2026.

“This is a major hybrid power project that also supports Kazakhstan to move towards decarbonised energy production and Wärtsilä is proud to be a participating partner,” comments Kenneth Engblom, Vice President, Africa and Europe at Wärtsilä Energy. “In order for widescale integration of power from renewable sources, grid balancing capabilities are necessary, and the Wärtsilä engines are ideally suited to provide this.”

Wärtsilä has been doing business in Kazakhstan since the early 1990s.
