Technical training collaboration: A triple win for everyone

Wärtsilä’s collaboration with Wasaline transforms technical hands-on training into a win-win-win situation, benefitting Wärtsilä, Wasaline, and maritime professionals.

At Wärtsilä, we believe in creating synergies that benefit everyone involved. Our partnership with Wasaline is a shining example of this philosophy in action. Through our collaboration, we’ve developed a unique training program that not only meets regulatory requirements but also enhances the skills and knowledge of maritime professionals.

Wärtsilä Land and Sea Academy (WLSA) provides technical training for Wärtsilians and our customers, supporting both Energy and Marine experts. Wärtsilä Land and Sea Academy training centre in Finland is located in Vaasa.

Navigating the International Code of Safety (IGF Code) with real-world training

The maritime IGF Code demands very specific training for personnel working with LNG vessels. For instance, to gain the advanced IGF Code certificate, required for certain positions, personnel must participate in three bunkering operations – two of which can be simulated, but one must be a real-life experience.

Conveniently located near our Vaasa training centre, the Wasaline vessel Aurora Botnia, equipped with Wärtsilä 31DF engines using LNG as fuel, provides the perfect setting for this hands-on training.

Strengthening partnerships for mutual benefit

Wärtsilä and Wasaline have enjoyed a long and robust partnership, and in 2023, we took this collaboration to new heights. The Wasaline crew has participated in WLSA training multiple times. And now, Wasaline is welcoming other WLSA training participants – marine experts representing other customer organisations of Wärtsilä – to join these bunkering operations, to earn their certificates. These visits are coordinated by WLSA and Wasaline together.

In return for allowing WLSA customers to observe bunkering operations, Wasaline earns training days for their personnel. This mutually beneficial arrangement ensures that all parties gain valuable experience and training.

In 2023 alone, WLSA organised ten bunkering visits together with Wasaline, allowing 39 training participants from three different Wärtsilä customers to receive their certificates.

Positive feedback from our customers

Our customers have expressed their appreciation for this unique training opportunity. Combining bunkering visits with training saves time and effort, while significantly enhancing participant competence. This collaboration truly represents a win-win-win solution for Wärtsilä, Wasaline, and our customers.

"During the bunkering, the Wasaline crew has the opportunity to interact with professionals from around the world and various segments of the marine industry. I see this as a great benefit for us," says Jonas Teir, Technical Director at Wasaline.
