A walk back in time

Since joining Wärtsilä in 2007 following the acquisition of his previous company, Paul and his team have shifted their primary focus toward Wärtsilä products. However, their expertise stretches far beyond Wärtsilä propellers, providing a comprehensive service renowned for its precision and excellence.

“I’ve been repairing propellers since 1990 and became Team Leader in 2004,” Paul shares. “Every time my team and I finish a job and hear positive feedback from the customer, it makes the hard work worthwhile. Repairing propellers isn’t just a skill; it’s rewarding to know we play a role in keeping vessels efficient and sustainable.”

Propellers are a critical component of marine vessels and keeping them in optimal condition is crucial for efficiency, safety, and sustainability. Paul and his team take pride in their ability to restore and optimise Wärtsilä’s cutting-edge propeller systems and a wide array of propeller and impeller types from other manufacturers. Extending the lifespan of propellers reduces not just waste but also the environmental footprint, ensuring vessels can continue to operate efficiently with fewer resources.

Teamwork makes the dream work

Working as Team Leader in Wärtsilä’s Glasgow facility, Paul prides himself on the strong sense of teamwork that defines his department. This camaraderie, combined with humour, drives his team forward, even under challenging conditions.

“We do take our work seriously, but we don’t take ourselves too seriously,” Paul laughs. “That sense of humour makes all the difference during challenging projects. It’s really about respect and mutual support - knowing that everyone is doing their best makes any problem manageable.”

From Glasgow to every corner of the globe, Paul has collaborated alongside Wärtsilä colleagues of diverse nationalities, fostering lifelong friendships and professional connections. Whether coordinating with Dutch colleagues in the UAE or teaming up with Finns in Tobago, his ability to bring people together ensures projects are completed effectively and efficiently.

Bridging cultures while solving challenges

One of Paul’s favourite aspects of his career has been the opportunity to work across continents, witnessing the world through the lens of different cultures. “When you travel for work, you get to experience the everyday lives of people in those countries instead of just the touristy areas. Some experiences are beautiful and inspiring, while others can be tough, even heartbreaking. But all those experiences helped shape me, not only as a professional but also as a person,” he says.

Global operations in challenging environments have defined Paul’s career. From repair projects in Australia and Hawaii to projects in Togo, Tobago, and Turkey, the experience has taught him invaluable lessons about adaptability, problem-solving, and the importance of health and safety standards.

“Implementing and constantly upgrading safety standards across our Glasgow workshops has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my role,” he explains. “It’s not just about getting the job done - it’s ensuring we do it safely, respecting our environment and the people involved.”

He’s invested in nurturing and supporting his team, enabling individuals to grow within Wärtsilä. “It’s motivating to see team members I’ve trained advance into other roles within the company,” Paul shares. “For me, leading by example and always pushing for the best is what keeps our team strong and focused.”

Life outside the office

Paul enjoys the fast-paced action of football, the exhilarating challenge of cycling, and the precision and focus required in golf since he plays all of them. But being based in Scotland adds a unique dimension to the mix. This beautiful country is home to some of the world’s best hill walking routes, offering Paul some breathtaking escapades.

Much like the competitive sports that fuel Paul, field service relies on expertise, dedication, and adaptability to deliver first-class results. It’s about ensuring every operation runs smoothly, whether out in the field or at new heights.
