As Wärtsilä turns 190 years old this year, we celebrate the pioneering colleagues that have contributed to the company’s success – meet Monique.
Monique didn’t realise how the sailing regatta in Sint Maarten would affect her career path. While on holiday, she was enjoying the bright and sunny day with clear blue waters, eager for a fun sailing adventure, when one of the other passengers said he wanted to go to the marina to see a new cruise ship. Monique wondered why he would want that, since all cruise ships looked the same to her, right? He told her that he had been one of the project managers for the cruise ship, but he had never had the chance to see it in person. This was Monique’s first experience of the Wärtsilä spirit, and she thought that it must be a great company if even on your vacation, you are curious to see what is going on.
It was not too long after this encounter, that Monique, herself, applied for a role and began building her own connection with Wärtsilä. When she joined Wärtsilä in the Netherlands, as part of the finance and accounting team, she quickly adapted to the company culture. She enjoyed the opportunities to enhance her skills and take up new challenges. After four years in the Netherlands, Monique sought more growth, and wanted to explore the diverse cultures of the global organisation. Hence she moved to Wärtsilä in Singapore, where she became the Area Head, Financial Statutory Accounting Services, Asia Pacific.
Reflecting on her time in Singapore for almost six years and experiencing the Asian culture, Monique feels she has grown a lot. Living and working abroad has offered her the chance to adapt to new ways of doing things and to appreciate the value of cultural diversity. She has gained extensive knowledge and believes that it would be beneficial for everyone to relocate to a different country and culture. One can learn so much and grasp a better understanding of other people.
Monique’s passion is to inspire people to achieve their potential. She envisions our Wärtsilä team moving towards a path of supporting our customers in a sustainable way, while staying at the top of our field. Everyone can contribute to this, especially now with the Continuous Improvement initiative, which, for Monique’s area of expertise, means quicker analysis processes and automated controls, all to reduce risk and improve reporting in finance and accounting.
As you might have guessed, after scoping out the said cruise ship, they went back to the sailboat and the sailing regatta and had a wonderful time in the lovely location of Sint Maarten and the rest is Monique’s own story of the Wärtsilä spirit.
