Continuously learning helps you successfully manage the future of work. This is something that Jesús Puelles has embraced throughout his 26-year tenure at Wärtsilä.
Jesús, based in Bermeo, Spain, has transitioned from engineering to sales. Initially, he was an electrical engineer for marine new builds, but later managed local contracts in Spain. In 2015, he led a multinational team for a major marine project in Germany, which he considers a career highlight. He then worked in Norway, Italy, and China, with the latter enhancing his interest in different cultures, leadership skills, and building friendships.
During his years with Wärtsilä, Jesús has developed a strong bond with the company, improving his project management, technical skills, and customer relations, eventually leading him into sales. Moving from engineering to sales can be beneficial since you bring a deeper understanding of the products and solutions, but there are other aspects to sales which do not come automatically. And it is where training and organisational support makes a difference. Being a lifelong learner, Jesús welcomed the opportunity to learn by doing and the induction into the world of sales.
His passion for learning never wanes. Jesús recently earned a master’s in mathematics to delve into Artificial Intelligence (AI). He also enjoys playing the guitar, which helps him relax after busy weeks, starting with online lessons and now with a teacher. Additionally, he loves enjoying life and good food.
He sees that Wärtsilä stands out among other companies due to its extensive knowledge base and easy access to technological advancements. Moreover, the international network of colleagues and exposure to diverse cultures provide a strong foundation for us to tackle new challenges confidently, knowing we can achieve our goals. Throughout his 26-year career at Wärtsilä, he has found fulfilment in learning and working with diverse teams. The entire company atmosphere is focused on learning, teaching, and the exchange of knowledge and information. Jesús, a Spaniard with a deep passion for football, likens working at Wärtsilä to participating in, and frequently winning, the Champions League.
Despite likely economic and political challenges and resistance to change, Jesús remains optimistic about the future. Two major forces will drive progress: the increasing need for energy and the evolution of maritime transportation.
With the support of our customers, partners, and suppliers, Jesús sees a bright future for Wärtsilä as we adapt to new environmental regulations and offer decarbonisation solutions for the marine and energy sectors.
