The power to target net zero

Last year, we launched the world's first 4-stroke engine-based ammonia solution – one which can immediately reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 70%, compared to a similar sized diesel solution, meeting current EU targets until 2050 and even exceeding the IMO target for 2040.

The Wärtsilä 25 Ammonia is the result of the development on efficient dual fuel engine technology. The development goal has been to meet both technical and operational requirements for ammonia-fuelled vessels, and safety considerations have been a key priority in all engine design.

A common sight across a variety of industries, ammonia as a fuel emits no CO2 when combusted and can be carbon free when it’s made using renewable energy.

As the shipping industry needs to move to cleaner fuels, there is no clear frontrunner among the several potential options. However, ammonia offers some unique benefits that make it a leading contender.

  • It doesn’t produce CO2, sulphur or particulate emissions when combusted.
  • A supply chain and infrastructure already exist for other applications.
  • It can be produced using renewable energy sources.
  • It is relatively easy to store and handle onboard ships.
