Darius Trušauskas has been an integral part of the Wärtsilä BLRT team in Klaipėda, Lithuania since its establishment. The Wärtsilä BLRT workshop, located in Klaipėda's harbour area in Malku Bay, specializes in the repair of propulsion systems, engines, and auxiliary deck machinery. The workshop operates within the Western Shipyard territory, which boasts three floating docks, including the largest in the Baltic Sea region. These docks attract vessels from all over the Baltic Sea region for repair work.
Darius’ career began as a student at Klaipėda University, where he chose to complete an internship at the mechanical ship repair workshop of the Western Shipyard. There, Darius was immediately placed into the rudder repair group, an experience that left a lasting impression on him.
After graduating with a bachelor's degree in transport engineering, Darius secured a position at the Western Shipyard as a foreman-intern in the rudder group of the mechanical workshop. His passion and dedication to the craft were evident from the start. When the production workshop transitioned to become the Wärtsilä branch in Lithuania, Darius had already established himself as a key team member. He was promoted to service coordinator for the rudder brigade, a role he continues to excel in. Remarkably, Darius has worked at this single workplace since his graduation, and this August will mark two decades of his dedicated service.
Throughout his career, Darius has taken on various roles within Wärtsilä. While on work rotation, he had the opportunity to serve as a technologist for the rudder group. A few years later, he returned to his role as a service coordinator and now leads a team of ten employees.
Working at Wärtsilä
What Darius finds most rewarding about his work is the dynamic environment that requires constant adaptation and problem-solving. The dynamic and collaborative work environment also fosters continuous learning and professional growth. Each day presents new challenges and opportunities to achieve goals, making his role exciting and fulfilling.
“I like my job because I am working side by side with real professionals in my field. There is a good ratio of older employees and younger specialists who can learn and take over years of experience from more experienced team members.”
Darius finds personal satisfaction in seeing meticulously prepared project plans come to fruition through teamwork. Each new vessel brings unique challenges and conditions, contributing to professional growth and personal development. After successfully completing a project, the team often gathers to celebrate their achievements over a cup of coffee, reflecting on the challenges they have overcome. Positive feedback from clients, especially new customers who bring their ships to the factory for testing and potential future collaboration, is a rewarding outcome of their hard work.
Safety as a priority
The nature of the work at the Wärtsilä BLRT workshop involves complex and dangerous tasks, such as working with heavy weights and oversized parts in limited spaces on ships and floating docks. Since joining the company, Darius has witnessed significant investments in both employees and equipment, which have been crucial to ensuring safer operations and better-quality work.
“The quality of the available equipment and the possibilities of operation are very important for the work we do. Modern equipment allows the planned work to be carried out faster, with better quality and, most importantly, safer.”
Learning and continuous improvement
Darius has enhanced his expertise through multiple training sessions at the Wärtsilä Land & Sea Academy in the Netherlands. This commitment to continuous learning ensures that the workforce stays updated on the latest innovations, improvements, and technologies in Wärtsilä products and services.
He also emphasises the importance of learning from mistakes made across various units within the company, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement. By analysing and discussing these errors with his team, he has fostered a culture of continuous learning and improvement. This approach ensures that similar mistakes are avoided and enhances efficiency and effectiveness across the board.
“With each project, the knowledge baggage is filled from the technological side, and it is improved through personal communication with our team within our company, as well as with customers from around the world who come to us with different projects.”
Working alongside other specialists at Wärtsilä has been another critical aspect of his career. The collaborative environment has allowed Darius to gain diverse perspectives and insights, contributing to innovative problem-solving. Representing Wärtsilä in customer projects has further honed his skills as a leading engineer, solidifying his reputation within the industry.
