As we celebrate Wärtsilä’s 190th anniversary, we honour the colleagues who have contributed to our company’s journey thus far and the vast pool of professionals that steer the company forward for the next decades. One such Wärtsilian is Andreij Selänniemi, who joined the company as a Summer Trainee in 2015.
Andreij works as a Solution Development Manager in Wärtsilä’s Turku, Finland premises. In his role, Andreij and his teammates initiate new and maintain existing solutions to ensure Wärtsilä optimally serves our customers at all lifecycle stages of their power plants. This spark towards technology, Andreij got already at a young age when overhearing phone conversations of his father: “My dad has been with Wärtsilä for decades. When I was a kid, his work conversations always sounded so intriguing, like rocket science, and not least since they happened in English – a language I couldn’t understand at that age,” Andreij describes.
While it was Andreij’s admiration for his father’s work that sparked the young boy’s initial interest towards Wärtsilä, Andreij has during his years with the company, learnt that a deep personal commitment to one's work is actually a shared company culture, one that distinguishes this multi-national company from other corporations: “The people I’ve had the pleasure to work with during my time here have all been very devoted to the work they do – people don’t just come in for the paycheck. This dedication makes Wärtsilä feel like a family-owned business.” He finds it meaningful to work in a company whose purpose and strategy are forward-looking.
When not developing lifecycle concepts, Andreij is dedicating time to his PhD – about long-duration energy storage (LDES) solutions – making it well-reasoned to say that this guy is truly passionate about transforming the energy industry. LDES is the foundation for a flexible, deeply decarbonised and sustainable energy system, since it enables sector coupling (electricity/heat/transport) to fully utilise and optimise renewables without curtailment. LDES is important because it ties into the hydrogen and sustainable fuels economy.
Andreij is looking forward to the years to come in the industry, excited about the ongoing transformation and certain that Wärtsilä will play a key role in enabling a more sustainable energy sector.
