Compartments at the bottom of a ship between the inner bottom and the shell plating. SOLAS 2009 specifies in detail requirements for fitting a double bottom: generally it is to be fitted from the collision bulkhead to the afterpeak bulkhead and shall be continued out to the ship’s sides. Under certain circumstances an unusual arrangement could be acceptable.
