Flexibility is what makes Wärtsilä Power Plants unique. In accordance with our customers’ requirements, we offer complete power plant solutions together with comprehensive lifecycle support. We can also both operate and maintain the plant for customers, a unique service in this sector.

Flexibility also characterizes the variety of fuels which can be used to run the power plants we supply. Our gensets produce electricity from sources ranging from natural gas, light and heavy fuel oil to liquid biofuels. As they are highly efficient, they create additional revenue for power plant operators. The fact that Wärtsilä power plants can be started and  ramped up to full load in less than 10 minutes ensures reliable supplies during periods of peak electricity demand and is also a handy solution for unstable grids.

At Wärtsilä, we have divided power plant solutions into four segments on the basis of end-use customer and application. Solutions for flexible baseload operation are mostly used by utilities and independent power producers to generate electricity for grids in developing countries, on islands and in remote regions. We have now delivered more than 3770 engines for use in over 1570 baseload plants in 136 countries. We also offer solutions for use in stability, peaking and standby power plants and have installed more than 1945 engines in 1015 plants of this type.

Industrial companies who wish to generate their own power use Wärtsilä’s combined heat and power (CHP) solutions. CHP plants produce energy and utilize the waste heat from generation processes to produce steam,  hot water and cooling. Over 3275 engines are already operating in 1735 Wärtsilä industrial power plants, while the oil and gas industry employs our power solutions in exploration, production, transportation and refining activities, both onshore and offshore.
