Many energy intensive industries find it attractive to improve their competitiveness by producing their energy in a local captive power plant and thereby reduce the energy costs. In some areas this improves also the availability of energy due to unstable grid conditions. Many of the industrial power plants operate CHP (Combined heat and power) plants, producing electricity and utilizing the waste heat of the generation process to produce steam, hot water and cooling. There are more than 3200 engines installed in 1720 Wärtsilä industrial power plants, producing 11 500 MWe. Most of these plants are producing also heat.
